RALLY TO END CHILD ABUSE – March 30, 2016, at 11 a.m.

Rally2016

Governor, First Lady to join effort to protect area children at the Big Four Bridge Lawn

WHAT:      Family & Children’s Place, The Face It® Movement, Kosair Charities® and other area children’s service agencies will kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month with a rally Wednesday, March 30, to talk about child abuse, violence and neglect, and about progress being made in the Greater Louisville area to stop and prevent abuse and heal child survivors and families. Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin and First Lady Glenna Bevin, along with Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, are scheduled to participate.

WHEN:      11 a.m. EDT, Wednesday, March 30, 2016

WHERE:   Big Four Bridge Lawn, River Road, Louisville, KY 40206

WHO:         Kentucky Gov. and First Lady Matt and Glenna Bevin

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller

Pam Darnall, president and CEO, Family & Children’s Place
Chief Steve Conrad, Louisville Metro Police Department

Jerry Ward, board chair, Kosair Charities

Dr. Terry Brooks, executive director, Kentucky Youth Advocates

Dr. Melissa Currie, associate professor and director of the Kosair Charities Division of    Pediatric Forensic Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine

WHY:          According to 2014 data, nearly 23,000 children suffered physical or sexual abuse or neglect in Kentucky. In Jefferson County, that number totaled more than 3,016 children. One child is one too many, and abuse creates lifelong impact in emotional and physical health, in relationships, in every facet of a child’s life through adulthood. We need to work together to end it – now.

HISTORY:  The rally, started by Family Place, which merged with Family & Children First in 2008 to form Family & Children’s Place, marks April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and shines a light on child violence, abuse and neglect in Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana communities. Partners have included social service agencies, Jefferson County Public Schools, Exploited Child Help Organization (ECHO), and others, including Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky.

In the last year, Family & Children’s Place:

  • Stopped the trauma of sexual and physical abuse for 1,289 children who received comprehensive care and treatment at the Kosair Charities Child Advocacy Center.
  • Counseled and provided supervised visitation and home based services for more than 1,615 individuals through our Child & Family Services program.
  • Provided tips, tools and training to more than 558 first-time parent families in more than 5,600 home visits through HANDS.
  • Saw social and academic improvement in 83 percent of students in our Family & School Services program.
  • Provided life-changing services and support aimed at preventing and ending abuse to more than 6,000 children and family members.

Since launch, the Face It® movement has made strides in ending child abuse through:

  • Creating and funding an independent, statewide External Child Fatality Review Panel to review every detail of when a child dies from abuse, to learn from the findings and identify how to prevent future tragedies.
  • Passing and implementing a state policy to ensure all medical professionals are trained to recognize early warning signs of child abuse and how to report the abuse.
  • Training teachers on child abuse prevention in the Archdiocese of Louisville schools.
  • Launching a resource portal for childcare centers in Jefferson County with information on how to prevent and end child abuse.

Face It® Movement members include: Archdiocese of Louisville Catholic Schools, Kentucky YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of Kentuckiana, Boys and Girls Haven, CASA, Center for Women and Families, Department for Community Based Services (DCBS), Exploited Children’s Help Organization (ECHO), Family & Children’s Place, Home of the Innocents, Jewish Family and Career Services, Kentucky Courts, Kentucky Youth Advocates, Louisville Metro Police Foundation, Maryhurst, Our Lady of Peace – Kentucky One Health, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, Sunrise Children’s Services, University of Louisville and Uspiritus.

About the Face It® Movement

The Face It® Movement, conceived and created in 2012 as a response to the public outcry against the increasing number of child abuse deaths in the Commonwealth, officially launched in April 2013, as a 10-year initiative led by Kosair Charities; its vision is that by 2023 all children in Jefferson County will be free from abuse and neglect.  Face It® directly addresses the increasingly unacceptable number of child abuse deaths in Jefferson County and the surrounding areas with best practices in child abuse prevention, community engagement and the promotion of effective policies to improve the child welfare system.
