The Face It® Movement Celebrates New Law to Protect More Kids from Abuse
Decisionmakers and partners gather in Frankfort for the ceremonial signing of SB 236
Frankfort, KY (August 15, 2017) – Children deserve to grow and thrive free from abuse and neglect, and they depend on adults to keep them safe. SB 236, passed by the Kentucky General Assembly this Spring and ceremonially signed into law today by Governor Matt Bevin, closes gaps in background checks of adults who work with children at schools, summer camps, and in the home as babysitters or nannies.
“As the sponsor of SB 236, I am honored to stand by Governor Bevin today as he affirms Kentucky’s commitment to protecting kids from experiencing abuse. Employers and parents now have the ability to access important information needed when deciding to hire someone to work with children,” said Senator Julie Raque Adams, Chair of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee.
Partners in the Face It® Movement to End Child Abuse advocated for the passage of SB 236 during the 2017 legislative session, including providing testimony in support of the bill before the House Health and Family Services Committee and Senate Health and Welfare Committee.
“Because of this legislation, parents can go to work or get a little respite from the demands of raising a child with peace of mind now knowing that their little ones are safe in the care of their camp counselors and babysitters, and in their schools. Kids deserve to learn and play in a safe environment, and Senator Raque Adams and our leaders in Frankfort have ensured that,” said Dr. Terry Brooks, executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates.
