Face It Intern Feature: Carli Mosby

We want to take a second to highlight the incredible work of our practicum student for the past year, Carli Mosby. Thank you for all of your hard work, Carli, and congrats on completing your MSSW! The world of social work is lucky to have you.

My Time with the Face It Movement

Throughout the past eight months, I have been a student intern at Kentucky Youth Advocates.  As an MSSW candidate at the University of Louisville’s Kent School of Social Work, I have learned a great deal about policy advocacy and community engagement within the confines of a classroom.  However, my time at KYA has allowed me to learn these important concepts in a more active way.

One of my favorite and most rewarding projects I worked on was with the Face It Movement.  Face It is a leading example in local public campaigns to prevent child abuse and neglect.  In fact, Face It has been recognized by Child Welfare Information Gateway as such.  Face It’s three-pronged approach to child abuse prevention (public education and awareness, best practices within youth-serving organizations, and policy advocacy) provides an all-encompassing method of engaging individuals of the community at all levels. Anyone with an interest in learning more about child abuse prevention and being the voice for Kentucky kids have a way to do so with the Face It Movement.

While interning with Face It, I have had the pleasure of working on several projects that helped to further the efforts of the campaign.  From researching available child abuse prevention trainings for youth-serving organizations to assisting with the creation of content for quarterly newsletters to creating surveys for parents to gauge where and how they receive information around keeping their children safe from abuse, my time spent with KYA has been ripe with Face It activities.  For me, however, the most rewarding Face It activities were attending community events and helping to educate fellow Kentuckians on the realities of child abuse and how they can play a part in prevention efforts.  Engaging with the community is a vital part of awareness campaigns, not only because it allows us to expand our reach, but also because we can learn so much from those we interact with.  We received such positive feedback from community members who frequently expressed their gratitude that organizations in Kentucky are recognizing the need for education and awareness-building of a topic that is often difficult to discuss.

My time with Face It has been eye-opening and wonderful.  I have no doubt that the Face It Movement will continue to grow in both its partnerships and its community outreach.  I know that those working closely with the campaign have a true passion for child abuse prevention and will do what it takes to alleviate the suffering of every kid in Kentucky.  It has been an honor to work on the Face It campaign and to be a face that ends child abuse.
