Face It® Friday: Celebrating National Foster Care Month

Celebrating National Foster Care Month: A Support System for Families

Strengthening families and focusing on their well-being is the key to building strong communities. Whether it’s promoting a collaborative relationship between birth parents and foster caregivers or providing parents with the right combination of supportive services to enable reunification, keeping families together is the primary goal in a successful child welfare system.

This May, National Foster Care Month recognizes that foster care must act as a support system for families, not a substitute for parents. The Department of Community Based Services reports that 9,777 children are currently in foster care in Kentucky as a result of abuse or neglect. In order to thrive, kids need safe, stable homes and families need the support of a strong community. We all can play a role in keeping kids safe and supporting families.

There are several partners in the Kosair Charities® Face It® Movement that provide supports for children in foster care, foster parents, and individuals and families interested in fostering through therapeutic services, trainings, support groups, and other assistance. Learn more: Sunrise Children’s Services, New Beginnings Family Services, and St. Joseph’s Children’s Home.

The Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) provides an array of services and supports for children in foster care, whether that’s through services focused on safely reunifying the child with their family or connecting the child to a forever home through adoption.
