Kosair Charities Face It Movement Release Priorities for 2020 Kentucky General Assembly

LOUISVILLE, KY (December 18, 2019) – The Kosair Charities® Face It® Movement focuses on a three-pronged approach to addressing Kentucky’s high rate of child abuse and neglect: promote best practices in prevention and intervention, build community awareness, and advocate for effective policies to keep kids safe and strengthen families.

As the convening of the 2020 Kentucky General Assembly nears, Face It is releasing its state policy and budget priorities.

“Strong state policies and sufficient state budget investments can lead to profound impacts for kids, families, and communities. In 2020, Face It’s policy work team will be advocating for an array of priorities from deeper investments in evidence-informed home visitation programs and proven programs that help parents achieve sobriety to strengthening state law around reporting child abuse and neglect, ending the practice of physical punishment as a form of discipline in schools, and ensuring children being enrolled in homeschool are safe,” said Dr. Melissa Currie, Medical Director and Chief of the Kosair Charities Division of Pediatric Forensic Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

Face It’s 2020 policy priorities include:

  • Strengthen Kentucky’s efforts in child abuse and neglect prevention by investing in programs that keep kids safe and families together and making commonsense changes to state law that would protect kids and help kids who have experienced maltreatment heal
  • Eliminate the use of corporal punishment in schools to create safe and nurturing learning environments for students
  • Ensure adults providing K-12 educational instruction in the home setting meet minimum educational and safety requirements, and that the child being enrolled in homeschool has not received a truancy summons

“Kosair Charities works on every level to ensure children have the supports they need to be safe and healthy with opportunities to thrive. We continue to look upstream in our efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect by advocating for common sense policies that lead to large scale, proactive differences for Kentucky kids and families,” said Keith Inman, president of Kosair Charities.
