February Ends on a Sweet Note with a Message from the Kentucky Oral Health Coalition

Farewell to Valentine chocolates and candy hearts! Our partners at the Kentucky Oral Health Coalition (KOHC) would like to remind families that February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a celebration aimed to help establish positive attitudes and good dental habits at an early age. KOHC is proud to join professionals, parents, and community members to help establish positive attitudes, practice good oral hygiene habits, and teach children about the importance of maintaining good oral and overall physical health to set them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Good oral health habits can prevent cavities, maintain a healthy mouth, and prevent gum disease. Children can practice good oral hygiene by:

  • Brushing their teeth for two minutes, twice per day using fluoride toothpaste after waking up and before going to bed. Parents can print off a calendar from Mouth Healthy to keep kids on track.
  • Flossing their teeth once per day, usually before bed. Watch this video from Colgate to learn how to properly floss.
  • Replacing their toothbrush every three to four months. Always replace a toothbrush if the bristles have worn out or they have been sick.
  • Eating healthy foods and avoiding sugary drinks, instead choose fluoridated tap water to help prevent cavities.
