Reflections from PCAA National Conference

My Name Is Damareus Jackson-Martin but I go by DJ for short. I’ve been a part of the truth telling circles for a few months and maybe one of the greatest things I did this year was be a part of this work. Last month, I, along with a few of my fellow foster alumni, attended the Prevent Child Abuse America national conference in Baltimore, MD. First thing I would like to say regarding this conference is if I could invite everyone to this, it would help the world in ways I can’t imagine. From the workshops to those who came to speak and all of those who attended from different backgrounds and occupations, it was a very surreal experience and a much needed learning opportunity. There was a large collection of workshops containing various topics, such as antiracism, using music to bond with children, sibling bullying, and plenty of more controversial topics. But what I really got out of this experience and what I’d like to share with other foster alumni is that without understanding something, it can be very hard to help your situation.

You can have all the education and it can take you a far way; but no one can take your experiences away. Instead of using what we or you may have been through as a barrier to stop you from growing, take that same experience and help someone else not have to go through what you have been through. Because we should always aim to prevent and not just help when things get bad. This trip made to understand my pain and the experiences I have been through can empower me. I want everyone to feel they are stronger than anything that has ever held them down. If I could attend this conference again I would. Surround yourself with people who support you and love you no matter the circumstances and occasion. But most importantly love yourself. There is nothing wrong with what you have been through. Use that same pain and turn it into power.
