07 Nov Celebrating National Family Literacy Month: Empowering Generations through Reading
November is a special month for families as it’s not only the season of gratitude but it also marks the celebration of National Family Literacy Month. Parents hear all the time about the importance of reading – this month we are emphasizing just how important the family is in reading.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says reading aloud to children daily from infancy stimulates early brain development and helps build key language, literacy, and social skills. Reading is even more powerful when it’s done together. From improved language skills to preparing for academic success to increased imagination and creativity to cultivating a special bond, reading together sets families up for success.
Read Together
There are lots of different ways to read these days, with e-books and online articles, but some new studies are saying that old-school paper books are still pretty awesome. If you love books as much as we do, you’ll agree that holding a real book beats scrolling on a screen any day – and it turns out, there’s evidence to show that paper books are really special. You can find books in all sorts of places, whether you go to the big public library in town or the cute little book-sharing box in someone’s front yard.
The Face It ® Movement + Imagination Library of Louisville
And here’s some good news for folks in Kentucky: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five and it is available in nearly every county in Kentucky! For National Family Literacy Month, The Face It® Movement has partnered with Imagination Library of Louisville, one of the many local program partners working to get more books into the hands of more children in their community, to spread the word about this amazing program. You can register a child under five in your life at https://imaginationlibrary.com/. Hear from Louisvillians about how reading has impacted them and how children under five can get free books through Imagination Library.
Give the Gift of Reading
When we share the joy of reading with a child, we do more than just introduce them to new worlds – we equip them with the essential tools that will pave the way for a brighter future. This National Family Literacy Month, let’s renew our commitment as families in Kentucky to foster a love for reading and let’s do it together.
