The Importance of Mental Health

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Louisville understands the importance of mental health. Our mission is to strengthen families and individuals affected by mental illness through education, support, and advocacy. Take a moment today to reflect on your mental health and recognize its importance. Just as you prioritize your physical well-being, it’s essential to care for your mental health with the same dedication.

Why is Mental Health Important?
It is easy to notice our physical health. Everyone gets a cold or a headache, but we often forget what goes on inside the body. Mental health is ultimately a state of mental well-being. It pushes people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, and ultimately be successful. Mental health is important because it affects how we think, feel, and act. Poor mental health can cause problems socially with our relationships between family and friends. It can lead to missed work or school, or other related problems. It can also cause problems emotionally with low self-esteem, low motivation and cause irregular sleeping patterns. Mental health is health and just as important as physical health. It is all connected.

Self- Care Essentials
Listening to your body is one way to practice self-care. Noticing what your body needs mentally, socially, physically and spiritually can benefit the body and help improve your overall well-being. Examples of mental and social activities could be reading a book or hanging out with close friends. Physical activities that help promote self-care would be healthy eating, normalizing sleep patterns and staying hydrated. Spiritual activities could be prayer, meditation or different ways to find meaning in your life.
