5 Ways You Can Participate in TEN-4 2025

This October, the Kosair for Kids Face It Movement is once again bringing awareness to the critically important TEN-4-FACESp Bruising Rule, the technique to recognize concerning bruising on young children, and emphasizing the importance of training adults on recognizing, reporting, and preventing child abuse September 20 – October 3. This year we are offering both virtual and in-person training options. We invite you to join us!

Pediatric abusive head trauma (AHT), or shaken baby syndrome, is a severe form of child abuse that most often involves infants. In this training, participants will learn the early signs of maltreatment and the various injuries and conditions that may result from vigorous shaking, slamming, or impacting the head of an infant or young child. They will also be provided tools for dealing with a crying infant and ways to share information with parents to prevent abuse from occurring.

5 ways you can participate:

1. Attend one of the following FREE trainings (with CEUs!) happening between September 20- October 3 with Kentucky’s leading experts in child abuse recognition and prevention:

— Child Care Staff and Volunteers. In person training on Saturday, September 20 at Centenary Church in Lexington from 10:00am-12:00pm EST. Presented by Sarah Vanover, EdD. Register.
— Dental Students and Dental Professionals. Virtual training on Tuesday, September 30 from 9:00am-11:00am EST. Presented by Carla Hay, MSN, RN, SANE AA/PA, AFN-C. Register.
— Statewide HANDS Workers. Virtual training on Wednesday, October 1 from 2:00pm-4:00pm EST. Presented by Dr. Jennie Green and co-hosted with HANDS. Register.
— General Audience. Virtual training on Thursday, October 2 from 12:00pm-2:00pm EST. Presented by Bailee Herbert, BSN, RN, SANE-P/A. Register.
— General Audience. Virtual training on Friday, October 3 from 10:00am-12:00pm EST. Presented by Dr. Kelsey Gregory and co-hosted with HANDS Louisville and Family and Children’s Place. Register.

2. Watch the TEN-4-FACESp Bruising Rule video to learn more and order the brochure to distribute at your pediatrician’s office, community center, or school resource center

3. Utilize the social media toolkit with refreshed resources to spread awareness or secure a local proclamation in our community.

4. Support a parent or caregiver in your life so they stay connected and feel validated by sending a supportive text, dropping off an activity box for the family, or setting up time to play or read a book with their child.

5. Make a gift to Kosair for Kids in honor of TEN-4 Day to support their work on child abuse prevention.

Keeping kids safe is an adult responsibility. Sharing information on recognizing child abuse and neglect equips adults with the knowledge and tools needed to understand the warning signs, how to report suspicious bruising, and ways to support families to prevent it from happening in the first place. Every adult in Kentucky is a mandated reporter of child abuse and neglect, and your report could be the one that makes a difference. Reports can be made at www.reportitky.org or 1-877-KYSAFE1.
