Summer-Time Safety Tips & Sunny Suggestions

By Tammy Donoho, Kentucky Youth Advocates

Congratulations parents, guardians, and caregivers! You made it! After homeschooling for months, you may be just as thrilled as your children that the school year is finally over. You might have thought it couldn’t be done, but you powered through!  Get out the party hats, confetti, balloons, and noisemakers! Thunderous applause for all of you!!!!

Amidst the celebration, you abruptly realize, it’s summer! What are the children going to do all summer???

Nostalgia may take you back to summers you celebrated as a child with fond memories of adventure, laughter, and good times with family. Suddenly this trip down memory lane is interrupted by the need to promptly respond, “Umm no sweetie, I don’t think the kitten needs a spa day.” Or, “Maybe we shouldn’t juggle the glass figurines handed down by my grandmother.” As well as, “Most of those bugs are happier living outside. They probably miss their families.” And the always popular, “This mud pie looks delicious! I’m going to save it for later.”

One thing is certain, your children are going to find ways to enjoy the summer. They might be collecting bugs or becoming chefs. Perhaps you and your family have something more adventurous in mind. Go ahead! Let the adventures begin!

Face It’s Bluegrass Team has gathered the following resources to help you and your family experience a safe, healthy, and magical summer. Rain or shine, keep safety in mind!

 – Amusement Park Safety
 – ATV Safety
 – Bicycle, Skateboards, and Scooters Safety

Summer is also a great time to revisit Face It’s SPLASH resource to review important body safety and boundaries information.

And remember to practice safe physical distancing, wear a mask when out in public, and wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Keeping kids safe is an adult responsibility!
